Harold E. "Harry" Cullinan, Jr., age 85, U.S. Coast Guard Veteran and Retired Chicago Fire Department. Beloved husband for 50 years to the late Mary Sue Cullinan, nee Cameron (2014). Loving father of Marianne LoRusso, Nancy Cullinan and the late Margaret "Maggie" Cullinan. Cherished grandfather of Vincent LoRusso, Taylor LoRusso and Veronica (Jeff Burnison) Cullinan. Devoted son of the late Harold and Florence Cullinan. Fond brother-in-law of Jane (Mike) Cameron-Clark. Dear uncle and great-uncle. Will also be missed by his loyal canine companion Adak. Harry was a beloved superhero to his family, a cherished father, grandfather and friend who left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He found joy in simple pleasures like cheering on the Chicago Bears and gathering around bonfires with his kids and grandkids. He also had a passion for going shooting and hunting. Thomas J Czapiewski, Sr., 79, of Huntley, formerly of Chicago, died Sunday August 4, 2024. Thomas was born September 9th, 1944, the son of Casmir and Mary (Rodzinski) Czapiewski. On May 8th, 1965, he married Georgia Mary Bartosovic, and for the next 59 years, much fun and good times ensued. Tom was a Chicago Policeman for 32 years. When he wasn't attending his grandkid's various activities and sports, he loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, golfing and was known to enjoy the occasional slot machine. His greatest joy was his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, great uncle, and friend, who will be missed by all who knew him. Tom is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Georgia, his children, Susan (Brian) Karnick, Thomas J. Czapiewski Jr., and Margaret (Alroy) Gomez, by his grandchildren, Charlie (Kristen), Emily (Emily), Jimmy, Delaney, Aubrey, Zach and Noah, his great grandchildren, Olive and August. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, James, LaVerne, and Dorothy, and his grandchildren, Tommy, Isabella and Braden. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 8th, 2024 from 11:00am until 1:00pm, with a service at 1:00pm at DeFiore Funeral Home - 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley, IL.

Jeanne Marie (Gillespie) Horvath, born June 28, 1929, passed away August 3, 2024. Jeanne was the beloved wife of 45 years of the late Ted G. Horvath, whom she married in 1950. She is survived by her three sons, Steven Horvath, Daniel (Diane) Horvath and James (Francis Minarik) Horvath; 7 grandchildren and 14+ great-grandchildren with the newest one due in August of this year. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 9, at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 114 S. Elizabeth St., Lombard. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, in memorializing Jeanne and to honor her father Joseph T. Gillespie retired Chicago FireFighter Engine Co. 107, donations to the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago would be appreciated. Fernando R. Shipley OBITUARY. On the morning of Saturday, August 3, 2024, Fernando Reynard Shipley, died peacefully, while at home, after a long, courageous battle with illness. Fernando was born on August 2, 1953 in Florence, Alabama. He lived in Tuscumbia and Flint, Michigan before moving to Waukegan, IL. Fernando attended Andrew Cooke, Novak Elementary School, and Thomas Jefferson Middle School. As a freshman, sophomore and junior, Fernando went to Waukegan High School, where he played basketball. During this time, he worked at M &B foods (Mardoian Brothers) on the Southside of Waukegan. As a senior he attended North Chicago High School. He played Basketball and his team went to the Super Sectionals before losing to Evanston. After graduation in 1972, Fernando attended the College of Lake County. He worked at the Lake County Health Department before becoming a correctional officer assigned to the Lake County jail. In September of 1979, Fernando was hired at the Waukegan Police Department. He worked in patrol, investigations (detective bureau) and traffic before becoming Sergeant. He won Patrolman of the year. Then, he became the Commander of the Juvenile Bureau. While at the Waukegan Police Department, Fernando became the co-founder of the Waukegan Chapter of Mothers Against Gangs. He also became a member of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force and was then promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Prior to leaving the police department, Fernando was elected in 2003 to the Waukegan Community Unit School District #60 Board of Education. He served 2 years and then became the Board President. Fernando retired from the police force in 2004. He became an Investigator for the State of Illinois Appellate Defender’s Office and worked several security jobs before finally retiring. Fernando leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 46 years, Dr. Harlene (Ricks); son, Matthew Eliot (Erica), Gurnee, IL; daughter, Rochelle Lynee, Chicago, IL; two grandchildren, Jayden Matthew and Scarlett Grace; sister Jacqueline (John) Joanem; special nieces and nephews including Marlene Glover, Michael Malone and Fernando Shipley; mother-in-law, Helen (Harvey) Ricks; sister-in-law, Valerie Ricks; brother-in-law, Wayne Ricks; a host of cousins and friends, including special friends, Joyce Epperson, Gerald Coleman, Larnell Farmer, Greg Holmon, Greg Jones, Dexter Reid, Vic Montano, Ken and the Gojos “Breakfast Buddies”. Fernando was preceded in death by his mother, Eloise Applewhite; father, Charles Shipley, Sr; brothers, Charles Shipley, Jr and Michael Malone; grandmother, Virginia Drumgood; uncles, Jack Brown, Edward and Lewis Mullins and father-in- law, Harvey B. Ricks. A Celebration of His Life Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Trinity AME Church, 210 South Ave, Waukegan, IL. Pastor Barbara Brown officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment is private.

Winifred “Winnie” Wahlen, nee O’Neil, 87, beloved wife of the late Frank Wahlen, CFD. Loving Mother of Cathy (Magic Rucker) Wahlen Pniewski, Suzy Betcher, the late Frankie Wahlen, Eddie Wahlen, Marty (Rasa) Wahlen. Caring Grandmother of Kelly Zekany, Michael (Rachel) Pniewski, Nellie Bly (Addo) Workman, Dan (Heather) Pniewski, Tom Pniewski, Amy Pniewski, Jenny (Zach) Negrete, Dan (Claire Jolicoeur) Betcher, Katie Betcher, Nicole (Jeremy) Noe, Claire Wahlen, Grace (Natalie Quinlan) Wahlen, Roz (Alyssa Walker) Wahlen, and Marty Wahlen. Loving Aunt to 26 nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. Winnie was truly an amazing woman. She treasured the visits, phone calls, luncheons, outings with her wonderful family and friends. She enjoyed living life! Winnie had a unique gift of making everyone feel special. Winnie generously shared her wisdom and stories. She was always willing to give guidance, comfort and hope. Winnie was a spiritual person and learned to “turn it over to God”, words by which she lived. A graduate of St. Xavier College, class of ’58. While there, she developed many significant friendships that continue on to this day. Winnie enjoyed teaching at Evergreen Park High School. She was a proud supporter of EP Mustangs even after her retirement in 1985. Winnie was an enthusiastic fan of Chicago area sports teams. Winnie was a proud and active parishioner at St. John Fisher for over 65 years. Visitation will be held at Beverly Ridge Funeral Home, 10415 S. Kedzie Ave. Tuesday August 13th, 2024, from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. Funeral Wednesday 9:15 a.m. from Beverly Ridge Funeral Home to St. John Fisher Church Mass 10:00 a.m. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to CHUM for the Steve O’Neil Apartments. “CHUM is people of faith working together to provide basic necessities, foster stable lives and organize for a just and compassionate community in Duluth, MN.” CHUM built a large complex of apartments for homeless families which they named The Steve O’Neil Apartments c/o 102 W 2nd St. Duluth, MN 55802.
