Matthew Joseph Canning, age 84, of Crystal Lake, Illinois passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. He was born June 21, 1940, in Poughkeepsie, New York. Matthew received his High School diploma from St. George High School and associate’s degrees in fire science and general education from McHenry County Community College. Matthew was a career paramedic and firefighter in the Mount Prospect Fire Department, retiring at the rank of Captain. Matthew was also a 36-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, retiring at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5. He was passionate about his service including his many years as an arctic warfare instructor. He spent more than 20 years as an adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America where he was able to use, develop, and share his outdoor skills. He was a Green Bay Packers fan. He enjoyed history, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. Matthew will be missed for his intelligence, humor, and loyalty. Matthew is survived by his children, Patrick, Kevin, Maureen, and Kelly, and his grandchildren, Casey, Hayden, Alexandra, Conner, and Lauren. According to Matthew's wishes, there will be no services.
