Edward C. Cagney III died peacefully January 17, 2023, Edward and Laurette (O’Regan) Cagney welcomed Eddie January 21,1943 in Chicago. He is survived by his three sisters, Mary Ellen Vitek, Rettsey (Gregory) Hull, and Annie Cooney, his former wife, Charlene (Burzawa) Cagney, numerous nieces and nephews, his stepsons, Marc and Charles Locascio, and his daughters Deanna Rummehoff, Kristine (Kent) Pemberton, Margie (Steve) Lucas, and Mary Catherine (Michael Jacobs) Cagney. He was a papa to Gianna Locascio, and a grandpa of eighteen, including Emma, Eddie and Thomas Jacobs. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Barbara, née Seske, his grandson, Nicholas Locascio, and his granddaughter, Caitlin Jacobs. Very young, Eddie discovered his talent for basketball, playing every minute he could, and having peanut butter sandwiches with a big glass of milk for the energy to play more. He honed his skills and became an All-Star at St. Patrick High School. His team gave St. Pat’s the push to compete in the IHSA instead of just the Catholic League. He earned a scholarship to play basketball at DePaul. Fortunately for the six people for whom he became Dad, the lure of travel and love of country proved stronger than a game, and he left DePaul, enlisted in the Army, and completed his military service before the draft. After his service, mostly in Korea, he returned home and went into the family business, the Chicago Police. For more than three decades, he served and protected the city in several districts and along the way, he made friends who have filled his life with camaraderie and laughter. After his retirement, he discovered the joy of long walks around Lake Katherine, playing golf whenever the weather was fine, and holding court during breakfasts with friends. When retirement days grew too long, he went back to work, protecting the federal courts and bonding with a whole new set of colleagues, transitioning from the youngster of the team to everyone’s favorite big brother. He battled health challenges with savagery while maintaining his incredible sense of humor and enjoying his other great passions, reading and keeping his mind razor sharp by learning new competencies. Eddie was a bear of a man with a soft heart who loved animals, his family, and his buddies. Always the peacemaker, he was able to resolve complications with his clear eye and sharp wit, like making a Communion veil appear at 6:00 AM the day of the event after the original ripped. He stayed calm under stress; he delivered two babies, one soon after joining the police, and then, his own baby girl who had decided to arrive five weeks early. He was a social butterfly, always meeting friends or traveling. He appreciated and was extraordinarily lucky to have such a wide and devoted circle of friends. During the last few weeks, the visits, calls, and messages of support and prayers filled us with gratitude. You brightened his last days, let him share a shielded part of himself, and allowed us to hear his chuckle more than you would imagine. In lieu of flowers, please raise a top-shelf glass to Eddie with your friends. The visitation will take place Friday, January 20, 2023, 3:00-8:00 PM at the Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home, 10501 W. Cermak Rd. , Westchester, IL 60154. Family and friends to gather Saturday, January 21st DIRECTLY at St. Domitilla Church at 4940 Washington St., Hillside for visitation 10AM until time of Funeral 11:00 AM with a military service after the Mass.
