Laurence B. Coffey Jr, 91, of Woodstock, IL passed away January 31, 2023. Laurence was born June 19, 1931 in Chicago, IL to the late Laurence and Mildred (nee Golden) Coffey. Laurence was a 1950 high school graduate from St. George High School in Evanston. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy for four years. After leaving the US Navy he became a Chicago Police Officer from 1956- 1962. He then became a Detective until his retirement in 1988. Laurence is survived by his children; Laurence (Patricia) Coffey III, Joan (Kelly) Yunker, Patrick (Sarah) Coffey, Kevin (Carol) Coffey, Nora (Late husband Robert) O’Donovan, Tim (Joyce) Coffey, John (Audrey) Coffey, and Michael (Susan) Coffey; 21 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, siblings; Maureen (James) Doessel, and David (Kay) Coffey, dear friend; Mary “Tess” Jackson, John Burzinski; and Ted Thomas; cousins, Noreen (Jim) Perrone, Jean Golden, Deborah (Daved Kendle) Golden, and Patricia (Steven Grunyk) Golden; and many additional beloved family and friends. Preceded in death by his cousins, Edward Gorman and Howard Strong Jr. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to a charity of your choice. William John Moynahan, age 76, of Willowbrook. Cherished son of the late William (Chicago Police Dept.) and the late Evelyn Moynahan. Devoted brother of the late Kathleen Moynahan. William will be missed by his cousin and guardian John Fehrman as well as many second cousins. William was preceded in death by his cousins Dan Erb, Carole Goodall, Bob Fehrman and Bill Fehrman. James H Smit, age 84, of Orland Park passed away peacefully on January 26, 2023 with Karen at his side. James (Jay) was the beloved husband of Karen Smit for 33 years. Loving father to Pamela (Chuck) DePalma, Jeff Smit, Melissa Smit and incredible stepfather to Joelle (David) Maslowski, Elizabeth Reilley and Laura (Kenneth) Repel. Wonderful grandfather to a big bunch that thought the world of him. Jay was extremely proud of his service to the community. He had a decorated career with the Oak Lawn Fire Department that spanned decades. He began his career as a firefighter. He worked hard and was promoted and assumed new responsibilities. He served as a Fire Lieutenant, Training Officer, Fire Captain and ultimately retiring as the department's Assistant Fire Chief. Being a first responder was a call that he answered bravely. Additionally, Jay was a instructor for the Illinois Fire Service Institute at U of I. Jay also served on the board of the Illinois Professional Firefighters Association for many years. Jay is a decorated Army Veteran, earning a good conduct medal at discharge. Jay had an infectious laugh and a booming voice that complimented his tall frame. He spent many years as a member of the West Towns Barbershop Chorus, putting on shows and even entertaining in Europe. He is proceeded in death by his parents Anna and James Smit, his brother Donald Smit, nephews Christopher and Randal Smit and stepson Adam Webb. A visitation for James will be held Monday, January 30, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home, 11333 South Central Ave, Oak Lawn, IL 60453. The Fire department will be walking at 6:00 PM and assembling at 5:45 PM at Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home. Funeral Services Tuesday at 10:00 AM.
