Commander Paul (Erin) Bauer; devoted brother of Julian (Carmen) Bauer, Mary Benton, Thomas (Lynn) Bauer; cherished grandfather of Keith, Nicholas, Katherine, Sara and Grace; devoted great-grandfather of nine; also loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. Thomas A. Bucina, of Fort Myers, FL (formerly Evergreen Park and Chicago, IL) passed away with family by his side on June 27th, 2023. Tom was born on April 8th, 1949, the first of 8 children, to Louis & Sadie Bucina on the Southside of Chicago. Although some would say his life began in the summer of '66 during a game of Spud ball when he met his future wife, Val. Tom graduated Kelly Highschool early, in January of 1967. However, their lives were soon upended that April when he was drafted on his 18th birthday. After surviving a tour in Vietnam, he came home and married Val on January 15th, 1972 to begin their great adventure. That love bore two sons, Tommy J. (Karen) and Jeff (Rachel), and his treasured granddaughter, Sadie. He embodied all that we aspire to be as humans. His innate leadership, the love he shared, the respect he bestowed, the honor he upheld, and the bravery he displayed. Tom wore many hats during his life, and he would often match them to his daily attire. He served our country proudly as a draftsman and achieved the rank of Specialist 4 upon discharge. He then served the city of Chicago as a police officer. He ran a successful realtor business, which led to him serving as President of the Southwest Suburban Board of Realtors in 1990. This endeavor ultimately granted him the title of Realtor Emeritus. He even worked in tech as a website creator. He was a college level teacher. He was our unofficial tax consultant. Tom's abilities knew few bounds as did his love for his family. He never missed a game, concert, and never forgot an anniversary or birthday. He took every opportunity to celebrate and tell those around him how happy and proud he was of their accomplishments, no matter how small. He and Val made it their retirement goal to move to SW Florida after discovering Sanibel Island in 1976 in a small ad in the National Geographic that read "More shells than people". They achieved that dream in 2017 when they moved to Fort Myers, FL. He loved to fish, read, grill, travel, spend quality time with his family, and win at games. He remains undefeated Grand Champ in pool pong, rummy, and probably connect 4. Above all, he loved his wife, Val, but music was a close 2nd. He was a singer songwriter and loved playing the guitar. He graced us with his legacy by releasing his album, Asian Hillside, this past February. Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Valerie; his two sons, Thomas J. (Karen), Jeffrey (Rachel); his granddaughter, Sadie; brothers and sisters, Sharon, Louis, Roger, Wayne, Maria; and many nieces and nephews. Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Sadie Bucina; in-laws, Jonas and Irene Ruzgas; sisters Karen and Denise; and many dear friends and loved ones. William Francis Calkins, Sr., "Bill," age 92 of Glen Ellyn, IL, passed away peacefully at home on July 9, 2023, surrounded by his family. Bill was born to the late Gertrude (nee Shanley) and Robert Calkins and was the ninth of eleven children. Bill married the love of his life, Anna Mae (nee Riley), in 1954, and they were married for 53 happy years. He was the devoted and adoring father of nine children – Patrick (Margaret Fetscher), Annamae (the late Carlos) Martinez, Bill Jr. (John Joseph Mastandrea), Michael (Sally Samaan), Julie Brennan, the late Robert (Mary Brennan), John (Lynda Jacobs), Molly (Jim) Thompson and the late Seamus (Cheri Molitor); loving "Papa" of Karli (Steve Loeppert), Theresa, Emily (Joshua Adams), Megan, Clare (fiancé Chip Carey), Sean, Tara, Seamus, Luke, Ethan, Kelly, Gavin, Annie, Sara, Caroline and Maeve; great grandfather of Annabelle. Bill's pride and joy was his family and wife Anna Mae. He retired as a Lieutenant of the Chicago Fire Department where he mentored many firefighters. His faith was front and center as he navigated all the ups and downs of life. He was inclusive, curious and kind, and as a friend of Bill W, he was compelled to be there to support others. His big heart and welcoming smile will be missed. Visitation: Tuesday, July 18 from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM at St. Petronille Church, 420 Glenwood Avenue, Glen Ellyn; funeral mass at St. Petronille Church at 11:00 AM. Mary Ann Strenski passed away June 23, 2023 at the age of 80, following a battle against cancer. Loving fiancé of the late William Miscovich, beloved daughter of the late Joseph L (CFD) and Stephanie Strenski. Loving sister of the late William J Strenski and John F Strenski. Mary Ann leaves behind family and many friends who loved her in her native Chicago and her adopted second home in Williams Bay, WI. A funeral service will be held at St Hedwig Catholic Church, 2226 N. Hoyne Ave, Chicago, on July 22, 2023 with a visitation at 9:00 AM followed by a Mass at 10:00 AM. Info:773-774-3333.
