Christos "Chris" Andrews, 92, of South Barrington, Illinois and formerly of Karoutes, Greece passed away on April 20, 2024. Beloved husband of Irene, nee Filias. Loving father of Pete (Patty), Christopher (Amanda) and Anastasia. Cherished grandfather of Christina and Alexandria, Christian, and Everini and Dino. Dear brother of the late Nick (Maria) Andrews, the late Assimoula (the late Spiro) Kakkanas, the late Spiro Andrews and the late Vicky (Harry) Bovis. Fond uncle to many nieces and nephews. Chris will be missed by many friends and family. Chris would have turned 93 years old this year on an assumed birthdate since there are no vital records remaining from his village at that time. His mother Anastasia, a widow, raised 5 children through poverty and war. She only recalled him being born in "late fall/early winter" so he chose November 26th as his birthday. As a young child, Chris lost his father and, as an adolescent, he lived through World War II. Mussolini's army marched through Greece and camped out in his village, taking over for several years, followed by Hitler's army. He and his brother would try to befriend soldiers in order to barter with them for food. At one point, he and his brothers hid under beds in girls’ clothing to avoid being taken by the communist forces. Some boys who didn't escape were taken to forcefully serve in the German Army. His village was burned to the ground repeatedly by the Nazis as he retreated high up in the evergreen forest and watched in horror. The enemy soldiers disrespectfully cooked soup in the village Church's sacred baptismal font, ravaged their personal belongings, and tortured and murdered relatives and neighbors. Luckily, he and his family escaped barefoot to the nearby town of Amfissa, where they settled for the remainder of their childhood. His high school was burned down after only attending for one full year. He witnessed many atrocities in his youth which would shape his future, build his perseverance and strengthen his faith. He and his family dreamed of a better life. At 19 years old, he and his brother Nick decided to come to America. It was 73 years ago when a determined and hopeful man embarked on a seventeen-day boat trip from Greece to America for an opportunity at a new life. Arriving at Ellis Island on July 16, 1951, as a 19 year old poor man, Christos Andreoulis was thankful for the opportunity to have a better life in what he called "the greatest country on Earth". He was given the name Chris Andrews (which he happily accepted) at Ellis Island in order to enter the country of opportunity. He had few belongings other than hope. Greek immigrants were considered low class foreigners at that time in America, but he never complained. He told stories of starvation, war, hard work and starting at the bottom with multiple jobs. He owned the Zephyr Bar & Restaurant in Des Plaines, he helped his cousin with the Aroma Coffee Company and proudly retired from the Cook County Sheriff's Office as a Subpoena Officer. He was so proud to be an American when he arrived and throughout his entire life. He was introduced to his beautiful wife Irene by his aunt in Sioux City, Iowa in 1969 and they were married in 1970. He wouldn't tell her his real age for fear she wouldn't marry him. She found out after they were married that he was 14 1/2 years older than her. They began their marriage living in a one-bathroom house in Des Plaines with his 2 brothers, then adding his mother, a sister-in-law, having two sons, adding a niece and nephew and finally having a daughter. They moved their family to Mt. Prospect. He and his family joined St. Nectarios in 1978 when the church was the chapel on the hill. He loved seeing the Church grow into what so many Greeks and future generations enjoy today. He proudly served in the St. Nectarios Parish Council for years and even volunteered to be the Greek School Principal at Church while his three children attended. He raised his children with a combination of lessons, tough love, reality and rewards. They later built a home in South Barrington where he enjoyed watching nature on his back deck along with his grandkids playing in the yard. His eyes had seen and his ears had heard a lot throughout his life. He was a great listener and advice giver. He focused on learning something from everyone he came in contact with. He was a survivor and a shining example of determination to build the American dream. He loved his Greek heritage. He kept it with him and spread it to all non-Greeks with pride. He was extremely proud of the family that he built and supported through his hard work in this country. He was very thankful of the opportunity that the United States gave him as exemplified by his favorite saying "May God bless America!" A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25th at St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church, 133 S Roselle Rd, Palatine, IL 60067, from 10am until the time of the funeral service at 11am.
