Thomas Davis.jpg
Thomas Lee Davis affectionately known to many as “Deacon”, “Sarge” or “Muffin” was born on January 31, 1936, in Hatchechubbee, AL to Arthur Davis Sr. and Bessie Mae Arnold Davis. He was the second oldest of thirteen children. Thomas confessed to Christ at a very young age while attending Bethel AME Church in Pittsview, AL. He attended school in the Russell County School District. While singing with his family around various towns in Alabama, Thomas set eyes on Emma Lue Willis and joined in holy matrimony the following year. To this union four daughters were born (Marilyn, Carolyn, Patricia, and Tina). In 1956, Thomas and Emma migrated to the North, making their forever home in East Chicago, Indiana. Thomas worked for Inland Steel for nine years before joining the East Chicago Police Department where his kindness and concern for the citizens of East Chicago was top tier. Thomas dedicated his life to the East Chicago Police Department for 31 years. Thomas was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and received numerous accolades for his unwavering service to all mankind. In 1957, Thomas joined St Mark AME Zion Church under the leadership of Reverend TJ Tipp and was a faithful member for over 67 years. Thomas was active on the Steward and Trustee Boards. He lent his voice to various choirs and served on the Men’s ministry. Thomas attended Bible study and Sunday school. He served as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher as well. Thomas displayed his theatrical skills in numerous church stage plays for he had a way with words. You may recall a few. “This is He”, “I know my mud”, and “Stay focused”. To know Thomas is to fully understand his love for the English language and with that understanding came the acceptance of correction if ever your grammar was not quite on point. Thomas loved to laugh and to make others laugh as his brothers and sisters were his fan club and would cheer him on even when he was the only one laughing at his jokes. Thomas was an exceptional father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be thoroughly missed as the patriarch of his family where he took extreme pride in being a provider and protector. Thomas was preceded in death by his father Arthur Davis, Sr. Mother, Bessie Mae Arnold Davis, daughter Carolyn Davis, Sisters, Annie Bell Davis, Dorothy Davis Shelton (Gerri), Eddie Mae Davis Miles (Rozell), and Great-granddaughter Elicia.
