Kevin M. Hargis - passed away unexpectedly, Saturday June 29, 2024, at his family home. Age 51. He is survived by his devoted wife of 19 years Amy Theresia (nee Billapando), his parents Larry and Charlotte Hargis, his brothers Lawrence Hargis, Michael Hargis and sister Judy (Kurt) Sedlacek. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved in-laws Ronald and Catherine Szarzynski. He was a member of Alpha Delta Nu National Honor Society for Associate Degree Nursing Programs, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, National Association of EMS Educators, National Association of EMT's, International Association of Firefighters and Illinois Society of Fire Service Instructors. Kevin was a devoted husband who loved the outdoors and traveling with his wife Amy and their dogs. He had a passion for helping people, whether it was through his work as a Registered Nurse, Paramedic, FireFighter or teaching CPR, he was always there to help. This is evident in his pursuit to always learn more about the field of Applied Sciences. Kevin began his career with the Justice Fire Department in 2002, and a few years with Pleasant View Fire Department before he began his career with the Joliet Fire Department as part of the Academy Class of 2002. He worked tirelessly through the ranks and became Captain. He was bid at Station 7 where he performed all his duties with his dedicated crew. Kevin had a very light-hearted personality, always referring to his friends and colleagues as "Big Buddy", earning him that nickname. He was loved by many and will be missed by all. Funeral services will be held from the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home & Crematory, 2320 Black Rd., Tuesday, July 9th at 9:30 A.M. to the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, 604 N. Raynor Avenue at 10:00 A.M. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park II. Visitation will be Monday from 3 to 8PM. Hello fellow retirees from the 18th District,
I want to take a moment to encourage you to attend the cemetery ceremony and the Celebration of Life. Ray was my friend since 1982. We worked, played and enjoyed life together. There is no price you can put on friendship.
Please attend the ceremony at the cemetery and/or the celebration of life at Ray's sister's house. If you do attend the Celebration please let me know so she has an idea of how much food she will need.
I will be flying into Midway on Thurs 18 July. If anyone is able and willing to pick me up at the hotel on Friday 19 July, I would really appreciate it. Thank you, John Wotring.

It is imperative for police officers to have a safe place they can call to talk about anything occurring in their life. The Chicago Police Department Professional Counseling Division provides comprehensive, confidential, and free services to all Department members and their families. For those who may feel comfortable talking to someone outside of CPD, the EAP recommends vetted helplines that provide free, anonymous, confidential and immediate support. These resources are here to ensure you have the support you need whether you’re having a bad day, have had a bad call, or feel in crisis. Our goal is to ensure every officer is aware of resources they can turn to for support. Please remember you are never alone - make the call. COPLINE® is a confidential 24-hour hotline answered by retired law enforcement officers across the U.S. CopLine® retired officer listeners provide support with an array of stressors that impact law enforcement officers and their families that they too have lived through. If a caller needs or requests further assistance, the CopLine® listener has access to vetted, culturally competent clinical referrals to therapists and programs throughout callers’ regions. This resource can be reached at 1-800-267-5463 and CopLine.org. Another resource is the Crisis Text Line, which serves anyone in any type of crisis, providing access to free, 24/7 support. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free and confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or mental distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across the United States.
