Peter Anthony Arpaia of Chicago, Illinois passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at the age of 74 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Pete is the son of Rosemary (nee Bagnuolo) Arpaia and the late Louis Arpaia. Pete is survived by his mother, Rosemary, his brother, James (Kathy) Arpaia, and his long-time partner, Patsy Petruzzi. He will be dearly missed by his four nieces and nephews, Anne Marie, James Louis (Brigid), Joseph Peter (Sarah) and Erin Elizabeth Arpaia. His six great nieces and nephews, James, Grace, Jack, Madilyn, Ryan and Wade Arpaia will miss their “Great Pete” tremendously. Pete will also be deeply missed by Patsy’s children, Sarah (Scott)Asselborn, Lizzy (Michael) Alebich as well as her grandchildren, Anthony, Vinny and Tessa Asselborn and Michael Alebich. Pete was preceded in death by Patsy’s son, Joey Petruzzi. In addition, Pete will be fondly remembered by his aunt and his many cousins. Pete attended St. Giles Catholic Grade School (’64) and graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School in 1968. He went on to join the Chicago Police Department at the age of 22 on October 23,1972 and served for 41 years, retiring at the age of 63 on July 8, 2013. While with the Chicago Police Department, Pete served with honor and dedication in many different districts, areas and units, retiring as a Sergeant from the Bureau of Organized Crime, Narcotics Section. Peter had an uncanny ability to make, and keep, friends wherever he went. His close relationships with his friends from his school days, as well as their extended families, are a true testament to this. He was a leader amongst his colleagues and leaves behind many friends from the Chicago Police Department. In lieu of flowers, the family greatly appreciates memorials to either The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, www.cpdmemorial.org or The Rolfe Pancreatic Cancer Foundation. www.rolfefoundation.org. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10th at Salerno’s Galewood Chapels, Sciaraffa Funeral Directors, 1857 N. Harlem Ave. in Chicago. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11th at St. Giles Catholic Church, 1045 Columbian Ave. in Oak Park. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at St. Giles Church for the Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside. Final Committal Prayers will be offered in the Interment Chapel at Queen of Heaven Cemetery prior to interment. Obituary | Peter A. Arpaia | Galewood Chapel (galewoodchapels.com).
