William (Bill) E. Blackstone, age 79; beloved husband of Denise (nee Woodall); loving father of William (Pamela), Joseph (Cheryl), Shane (Regina), Justin (Kaitlin), Jared, and the late Ryan Blackstone (Megan (Blackstone) Knigge); cherished grandpa of Isabel, Matilda, Bradley, Thomas, David, Meghan, Shannon, Joseph Jr., and Logan; fond brother of John (Sally) and Marion Blackstone; caring “grandpa” to Conner and Cooper; kind uncle to many nieces and nephews; and loved by his faithful companions Lilly and Coco. Bill will be remembered for his love and loyalty, his kindness and compassion, his strength and camaraderie. Born in East Chicago, Indiana, Bill excelled in baseball as a youth and gymnastics at Thorton Township High School in Harvey, Illinois before joining the police force. After a career serving and protecting (earning many awards and commendations along the way), Bill moved on to a civilian career and retired from the Arcelor Mittal steel mill in 2018. Bill’s limitless dedication to his family was without equal. As a father of six boys who love him dearly, Bill coached sports teams, taught life skills, attended graduations, got out of bad apartment leases, danced at weddings, welcomed grandchildren, and shared his great love of golf. He showed up whenever he was needed, even when you didn’t know you needed him. We’ll never forget how he squeezed our knees or tapped the opposite shoulder to get a laugh. Bill was the best, and he will be sorely missed. Visitation Monday 3-8 P.M. Daniel Mark Hopkins, a retired Chicago Police officer, was married to the late Phyllis Spiegel; father of Daniel Patrick Hopkins, USN; grandfather; uncle; and friend of many.
