Edward A. Merkl, 97, retired CPD & WWII veteran, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025. Beloved husband of the late Evelyn, nee Helgason. Loving father to Karen (Jeffery) Richards and Marilyn (Tom) Driscoll. Adoring grandfather and “BeBop” of Emily, Susie and Ginny. Cherished son of the late Adam and Frances, nee Klein. Dear brother of the late Marilyn (the late Frank) Peters. Brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and dear friend to many. Ed served on the Chicago Police Department for 32 years. The family is very grateful for his loving caregiver, Cheryl, and his friends at The Carrington. Memorial donations in Ed’s name can be made to the 100 Club of Illinois, 875 N. Kenneth D. "Ken" Robertson, age 80, U. S. Navy Veteran, went to be with his Lord on May 7, 2025. Beloved and devoted husband for 48 years to Judy, nee Kloese. Dear father of Brian, Ruth (Vinny) Sinnott and grandfather of Vee Richmond and Lawrence Sinnott as well as great-grandfather of Aria and Nixon Richmond. Cherished son of the late Douglas and Edna Robertson. Preceded in death by his brother John. Dear uncle of many nieces and nephews. "Adopted" dad by many over the years. Ken was a retired paramedic and security officer, keeping people and communities safe for over 30 years. He worked at hospitals such as Holy Cross and Palos Hospital and various schools including Brother Rice, Mother McCauley, Saint Xavier and Moraine Valley. Ken always had a big heart for animals, rescuing many dogs and cats over the years. You could often find him taking the time to feed the birds and squirrels around his home as well. A Celebration of Ken's life will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Calvary Church of Orland Park, 16100 S. 104th Ave., Orland Park, IL at 10:00 a.m. A live stream of the service will be available. Also, on 14 May at 1800 hrs., our (other) pipe band, Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society, Chicago Police Department, was chosen to be the 2025 Host Pipe Band at the National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies 31st Annual Parade and March as detailed on page 21 of the Information Guide.

The Professional Counseling Division/ EAP would like to remind all department members about the Family Member Suicide Support Group, which will meet on Tuesday, 13 May 2025, at 6:00 p.m. (1800 hrs). The meeting will take place at the EAP South Office, located at 11540 S. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60643, Phone: (312) 742 0222. This support group meets on the second Tuesday of every month and is open to the family members of department personnel who are seeking support and resources. If you are interested in joining or would like more information, please call (312) 743-0378 and ask for Assistant Director Kathleen O’Neill to complete the screening process for participation.
