AND…
Maureen Patrice Toner (née Buckley), a devoted wife and mother, gifted teacher, and former St. Patrick’s Day Queen, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026 — a day that seemed written for her. She was 92. In a life that spanned nearly a century, Maureen was a wife for 66 years, mother of 11, grandmother of 14, and great-grandmother of one, as well as an educator who inspired thousands of students over several decades.
Born on February 11, 1934, to Patrick Buckley, a Chicago policeman, and Hazel Buckley, Maureen grew up on the city’s West Side but relocated to Oak Park after the death of her father when she was just 14. Even as a young girl, she distinguished herself: she was selected as a “Quiz Kid,” appearing multiple times on the beloved Chicago radio program, and she earned the honor of Queen of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 1951. She went on to earn a B.A. from Dominican University (then Rosary College) and an M.A. in history from Loyola University Chicago.
Maureen met Hugh Francis Toner, Jr. of Cicero, IL, in a hotel elevator in Portland, Oregon. She was vacationing and he was returning from the Air Force. They married in 1957, stayed together in love for 66 years in Chicago and later Westmont, IL.
After graduating college, she taught briefly at elementary schools on Chicago’s West Side — but then came what she considered her “calling” and the greatest blessing of her life: to be mother to 11 children, for whom she stayed home for 21 years. Her children knew her as a brilliant, resilient, generous, deeply faithful, and loving mother. She instilled in her children, and in generations of students, the conviction that they could accomplish anything they set out to do. She was unfailingly present in her children's lives, encouraging them at every turn and celebrating each success as if it were her own.
Maureen returned to teaching in the early 1980s. She taught two years at Lockport Township schools before joining the Chicago Public Schools in 1982, serving at Bogan High School from 1984 to 1998. She then moved to Jones College Prep, where she would teach until her retirement in 2008.
At Jones College Prep, Maureen taught AP U.S. History and every level of Latin, from Latin I to AP Latin, and led her students to the annual national Latin competitions. She was, in her own words, someone who “loved every minute of it.”
Retirement did not slow her. Maureen tutored recent immigrants in English as a Second Language through the School on Wheels program and taught CCD at St. Mary of Gostyn Church in Downers Grove. She also substituted in local schools.
A devout Catholic and proud Irish-American, she loved Irish music and dancing, and her favorite film was The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara — a film she had watched countless times.
On this past St. Patrick’s Day, Maureen passed away the way she lived much of her life: surrounded by her children, the air filled with singing, praying, and the sounds of The Quiet Man playing in the background. It was a fitting end to a remarkable life.
Maureen is survived by all 11 of her children: Hugh III, Patrick, Terence, Laurence, Jack, James, Kevin, Chris, Tim, MaryAnn, and Maureen, as well as 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hugh, in 2023.
Those wishing to honor her memory may consider a donation to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in lieu of flowers.
