Obituary of Edward J. Whalen
Edward J. Whalen, Ret. Lt. C.F.D., passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at age 89. He was born in Chicago, IL, where he lived most of his life.
Ed attended Lindblom High School and Northern Illinois University before leaving NIU to serve in the U.S. Air Force. He later married Mary Sullivan (Wampole) and joined the Chicago Fire Department, where he served faithfully until his retirement. In retirement, Ed enjoyed the Chicago White Sox, fire department collectibles and watching classic movies. He was also a lifelong lover of hockey and the Chicago Blackhawks.
He was the loving son of Edward, Ret. Engineer C.F.D., and Mary (Leyden) Whalen. He was the dear brother of James and was preceded in death by his sisters, Patricia Steinbeigle(late Robert) and Barbara Ruiz (Charles).
Ed will be lovingly remembered by his children, Laura (Mark), Michael (Maia), and Thomas; his grandchildren, Shannon, Tyler, Natalie, Sam, Tommy, Tim, Gavin and Natalie Hess; and his many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Saturday, September 5, from 4:30 p.m. until time of service at 6:00 p.m. at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 W. 103rd Street, Oak Lawn, IL. 60453. Interment will be held privately.

Roger John Salvino, 92, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026. Those who knew and loved him will be forever grateful for his loyal heart, sense of humor, devotion to family, and the remarkable example he set throughout his life.
Roger was a loving husband of 68 years to the late Patricia Ann (Kopecky) Salvino, and is survived by his two sons Dr. Kevin (Colleen) Salvino, Kregg (Cindy) Salvino, his seven grandchildren Samantha Salvino, Ryan (Baleigh) Salvino, Joel (Camella) Salvino, Brendan (Chloe) Salvino, Conor (Emily) Salvino, Cecilia (Nile) Popchock, Caitlin (Christian) Luthi and seven great grandchildren, each of whom brought him immeasurable pride and happiness. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with them, from their earliest years through adulthood.
Roger proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, and dedicated 32 years to protecting and serving the residents of Cicero as a police officer. He was one of the founding collective bargaining representatives of what is now the Cicero Police Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council Bargaining Unit.
He was also a founding owner of Salvino Brothers Aluminum, a family business that earned the trust of generations of homeowners throughout the Cicero and Berwyn communities. Roger loved sports, and Salvino Brothers Aluminum proudly sponsored youth basketball teams in the Clyde Park District. Roger was a baseball coach for South Cicero Little League and Babe Ruth League for many years, supporting his grandsons, young athletes and strengthening the community he loved.
For more than 50 years, Roger was a passionate horse owner and trainer. His love for the sport inspired him to write a book, “Families Bringing Thoroughbred Racing to Illinois”, preserving the stories of the families who helped build Illinois racing for future generations.
Roger was a devoted Catholic and a member of Our Lady of Charity Parish for 65 years. Above all, Roger loved God and his family. One of twelve children, he understood the importance of family, loyalty, and togetherness. To know Roger was to love him wholeheartedly. His sons and grandchildren are blessed to share countless treasured memories with him fishing, golfing, spending time at the racetrack, or simply gathering together as a family. Roger found his greatest happiness in the moments he shared with the people he loved most. His was a life truly well lived, and he will be greatly missed.
Visitation Wednesday, August 12, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. till time of of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Mary Queen of Heaven Church 5300 W. 24th St. Cicero, Roger and Patricia will be buried at a private ceremony in Mount Auburn Cemetery. Obituary information for Roger J. Salvino
