Subject: Your Medicare Supplement

The city will NO LONGER provide our
Blue Cross/ Blue Shield Medicare Supplement, effective 1 January.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield, not the City of Chicago, will be offering Medicare and Non Medicare Insurance Plans for retirees and their spouse, for 2017.

You will be receiving enrollment information from them shortly.

The FOP has been working with Source 1, for several years, to provide retirees with an Aetna Medicare Supplement. Aetna will be offering retirees a Medicare Supplement very comparable to our current BC/BC Supplement.

The Medicare Supplement that BC/BC will be offering will cost approximately $339.00 per month and WILL NOT PROVIDE THE SAME COVERAGE AS THE ONE WE CURRENTLY HAVE...

Aetna will be offering a Medicare Supplement VERY COMPARABLE TO OUR CURRENT BC/BC Supplement Plan for $292.00 and is trying to reduce that AMOUNT.

The FOP has been working closely with Source 1, for the past several years and advocates the Aetna Plan.

Kindly wait until you receive the Aetna enrollment information and review ALL the plans before you make your decision.

ONLY the BC/BS Supplement plans and Aetna Supplement plans being offered will be deducted from your pension check so you won't lose your Public Safety Act deduction of $3,000.00.

I personally recommend the Aetna Medicare Supplement.
Its prescription drug plan is very similar to our previous BC/BS plan, with mail order prescriptions.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF THE FOP TO JOIN THE AETNA PLAN....

You should also be aware of how some policies work. Their is a clause in some policies that are referred to as a, "donut hole." It simply means there will be a time when your policy does not cover prescription drugs. It will give you coverage until a certain dollar amount, then it will stop. It will pick up again after you have met an amount of money determined by the insurance company. You may be responsible for a large dollar amount of your prescription drug costs.

At that point the carrier will resume the coverage. Our current BC/BS does NOT have a, "donut hole". The coverage was constant.

The Aetna plan does NOT have a, "donut hole".

Many of these plans DO HAVE A, " donut hole". So make sure you ask......

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU OR YOUR SPOUSE REQUIRE MANY PRESCRIPTION DRUGS...

Also,
This is what BC/BS is going to offer "Non-MEDICARE" retirees. (Under 65)

For an individual, approximately $1,466.00
per month.

For a married couple, approximately
$2,610 per month.

For a family of 4, $3,622.00 per month or approximately $43,000 per year.......
for 2017'.....

In the upcoming weeks, the FOP will be having Healthcare Vendors at the White Eagle Restaurant, in Niles, at 115 Bourbon Street, on the south side, and at the FOP Hall, in the next few weeks to explain and answer your questions. We'll be sending out an email when we solidify a date.

Hope this helps,
