AND...

From retired CPD Lieutenant Terry McMahn

As a quick update, many of you have reached out with questions & opinions on whether the recently enacted IL. bill # 5471 will affect retirees.
I reached out to the IL. State lodge of the PBPA and talked to its General Counsel, Sean Smoot. He gave me the following information.

-- The original bill did not exempt any LEO's; active or retired.

-- As it went through the lobbying process the House bill exempted active LEO's but not retirees.

-- The Senate version did exempt retired LEO's.

The final version, which the Governor signed exempts active LEO's & retired LEO'S who qualify with the provisions of the Federal Bill HR 218. This is the bill passed in 07/2004 that allows retired LEO's to qualify on the range once a year and are then able to conceal carry nationwide.

So, in summary per Sean Smoot, if you as a retiree qualified with the provisions of U. S. HR 218 then the restrictions in the recently passed IL. bill 5471 do not apply to you.

I hope this is of some help,

Terry McMahon
CPD Lt.'s Retiree Representative.
