Benjamin Joseph Peterson died on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at the age of 45 after conquering a long battle with cancer. Ben died peacefully at his home in Lincolnshire, IL. Ben was born on June 24, 1977 in Chicago, IL to Joseph and Veronica Peterson ( nee Alwart) and raised in Rosemont, IL. He studied law enforcement and criminal justice at Western Illinois University and went on to have a long career as a police officer at the Park Ridge Police Department. Ben married Karen Peterson (nee Publ) on June 10, 2006 in Glen Ellyn, IL. Ben’s spirit will be carried on by his wife and forever best friend, Karen and his two children, Claudia (age 13) and Cameron (“Cam” age 11). Ben is also survived by his only brother, Allen Peterson and sister-in-law Melissa (nee Barnett) and hundreds of dear friends. Ben’s memory will live on within those of us who have had the honor of knowing and loving him. Ben lived a great life. Visitation Friday, March 3, 2023, 4:00 p.m. until time of a Memory Sharing Ceremony at 7:00 p.m. at Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokiie Boulevard, Skokie, IL 60077. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make memorial donations in his name to the Special Olympics, an organization Ben cared about deeply.

Quilts for Cops was founded by Bobbie Bebereia, a retired 911 Dispatcher at Oregon’s second largest PSAP 911 center, to provide comfort to Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders injured in the line of duty. Since its inception in 2016, over 1700 quilts have been given to First Responders across the nation.

Recognizing a need in Chicago, retired Officer Marla Margelewski volunteered to organize a Chicago presence. The Police Chaplains Ministry is proud to offer support for this worthy cause. Chaplain Hysni Selenica will be working with Marla on this mission. Marla is a long arm quilter with years of experience and is familiar with the Quilts for Cops organization.
