David H. Eichler Obituary. It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved David H. Eichler (Chicago, Illinois), who passed away at the age of 64, on July 11, 2023. You can send your sympathy in the guestbook provided and share it with the family. He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Mary Eichler and Mammay; and his siblings, Garnet Griffin (late Bill), Thomas (Beverly), William (Joanne), Robert, Dennis (Pai), Karen Gatz (late Larry) and Donald Eichler. Gene Pool Marlin, 81, of Chatham, Illinois, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2023, at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. He was born September 18, 1941, in Heralds Prairie, Illinois. The only child of Charles and Doris Lucille (Pool) Marlin. Gene married Carol Ann (Broaddus) Marlin on January 1, 1982. She preceded him in death on September 29, 2020. Upon an honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps, Gene was appointed to the Illinois State Police. In a career spanning three decades, he served as a Trooper and worked his way up through several ranks and positions. Gene retired with 36 years of service as Director of the Illinois State Police. He is survived by his sons, Douglas (Angie) Marlin of Lincoln and Christopher (Maggie) Weidler of Springfield; daughter, Brenda Jo Marlin-Miller of Springfield; grandchildren, Rachel (fiancé, Dan) Marlin of Ottawa, Brett (Maycee) Marlin of Lincoln, Blake (fiancé, Jazmine) Marlin of Crown Point, IN, Lilly and Molly Weidler of Springfield, Dylan (fiancé, Becca) Miller of McLean, and Wyatt Miller of Morton. Gene is also preceded in death by his parents. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, 2023, at Butler Funeral Home-Chatham, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, IL. In keeping with Gene’s wishes, cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. Graveside Ceremony: 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023, at Roselawn Memorial Park, Springfield, Illinois. Below is the father of CPD Commander Gary Yamashiroya!

Herbert Yamashiroya passed away peacefully on Monday, July 17, 2023, at age 92. Son of the late Midori and Yasue, née Yonemori, Herbert was born in Honolulu as the oldest of 10. He attended McKinley High School and graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1953. He joined the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corps. In his own words, “I joined during the outbreak of the Korean War. I served at a medical center in San Antonio, Texas, and in Tokyo. I was a clinical laboratory officer, bacteriologist, microbiologist, and virologist and ended up in an Army research unit in Japan. After an honorable discharge from the Army, I briefly came home to Honolulu but returned back to Japan soon after to work with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima from 1956 to 1958. I was part of a team that studied the genetic impact of the atomic bomb on the civilian population through the National Academy of Sciences of the National Research Council.” He met his future wife, Kiyoka, while working there. She had been working at the ABCC as a nurse prior to Herbert’s commission there. They were married in 1957. After concluding his contract, they made their way through Honolulu to meet the family and came to Chicago in 1958. He joined the U.S. Army Reserve, 361st Medical Lab, as a Captain from 1959 to 1963. Herbert was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the U.N. Service Medal, and a Merit Unit Commendation. He was proud to be a founding sponsor of the U.S. Army Museum in Washington, DC. He was also a longtime member of the Chicago Nisei Post 1183 American Legion, where he once served as a Junior Vice Commander. Under the G.I. Bill, Herbert got his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in microbiology from the University of Illinois at the Medical Center. He had a long and accomplished career from working at the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute in Chicago from 1964 to 1971 to the University of Illinois Department of Pathology, College of Medicine, from 1971 to 1997, where he retired as an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies. He established a highly regarded reputation as a researcher, consultant, lecturer, educator, and author in microbiology. He was recognized with a Tanner-Shaughnessy merit award from the Illinois Society of Microbiology. Dr. Yamashiroya has been featured in several editions of the Marquis Who’s Who publications. Herbert enjoyed many hobbies throughout his lifetime including bowling in a league, playing cards, collecting coins and stamps, and travel. He was an avid fisherman which led to trips to Wisconsin and lakes all around Illinois every weekend. Many hours were spent at Montrose and Belmont Harbors and Northwestern snagging for chinook, fishing for coho, trout, perch, and smelt in Lake Michigan. Another pastime was oil painting which featured a scenic waterfall or a Hawaiian tiki. Music was always playing in the household and in the car: classical, instrumental, soft and mellow Muzak, or Hawaiian, when not listening to news radio. He played the clarinet in his youth; however, his instrument of choice became the ukulele when he joined the Na Kupuna Ukulele Club of Chicago. The camaraderie among his fellow members was greatly fulfilling. Kiyoka joining the group and playing the ipu enhanced the time spent performing all over Chicagoland venues. Chicago sports teams were a top priority and watching the Bears took the number one spot. It was an activity that often-included family time, so it became an important event. Having spent 11 years living within a mile of Wrigley Field, the Cubs were also a favored team that called for a family gathering. The Bulls were not too far behind. Needless to say, Illini football and basketball called for the most loyalty and an indomitable spirit. Retirement afforded the opportunity to visit all the Midwest casinos on a regular basis whether by tour bus or car. He, family, and friends would judge the value of a particular gambling site by their free play offerings, perks, and the quality of the buffet. Las Vegas was also popular and a reunion destination for fellow alumni from Hawaii. Video poker was the game of choice. In most recent years, the Illinois lottery had a loyal customer (supports education). Most importantly, Herbert was devoted to his family and truly enjoyed celebrations and gatherings. Herbert is survived by his wife of 66 years Kiyoka; his children, Gail Y. (James) Paskind, Eliot (Kathleen), Eric (Carmen), and Gary (Aleksandra); grandchildren, Elizabeth, Camille, Aiko, Noa, and Kenji; brothers, Roy, Victor, Jerry, and Stanley; sisters, Helen Sugimoto and Betty Yonemori; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother, Tracy Yamashiroya, and sisters, Jennie Fujimoto and Gladys Naito. Visitation, Monday, July 24, 2023, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., at HABEN Funeral Home & Crematory, 8057 Niles Center Rd., Skokie. [ Note – Please omit flowers. Joseph A. Zaccagnini, age 89, U.S. Army Veteran, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2023. Joseph was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy, nee Master; loving father of George J. (Suzanne) and Joseph A. (Annette) Zaccagnini; dear son of the late Helen and Joseph; cherished papa of Ashley (John) Lloyd, Deanna, Christopher, Joseph and Nicholas Zaccagnini; great grandfather of William Lloyd; deaest brother of Josephine (John) Watrach, James (Donna), and Anthony (Virginia) Savino and the late Peter (Esther) Zack; fond uncle of many.
