John J. Reed “Jack” U.S. Marine Corps Vet. Age 82. John “Jack” Jerome Reed, 82 of Orland Park, IL, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2023 surrounded by his family and dear friends at Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital. Jack was born on July 30, 1940 at Loretto Hospital, Chicago, IL, to James and Honora (O’Shea) Reed. He attended St. Jude Seminary School where he learned Latin and many skills, graduating in the top of his class. Jack would often follow-up that pronouncement with the caveat, “But it was a small class,” because he was so humble. Jack was a choirboy, and although he did not have the best singing voice (the choir director kept moving him farther and farther back in the ensemble), Jack kept singing. Jack is a hero to us all. He served his county in the Marine Corps from 1961-1967, spending much of his time in Okinawa, Japan, and would find ways during his service to bring joy and peace to those with whom he served. For example, he took great delight in switching the enlisted men’s watered down beverages with the officers’ drinks, as he felt all the men should be taken care of equally. He met the love of his life, Arlene, in 1966 when he was her driving instructor, and asked her for a date. When he decided to become a police officer he asked if she was okay dating one, because of how dangerous the job was, to which she said, “Yes!” Jack and Arlene were married on June 24, 1967, and recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. Arlene described Jack as simply being, “the best husband a wife could ask for.” Jack became a police officer with the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department, and served from 1966-1998, over which time he experienced an incredible career. Jack was a homicide detective, solving murders and acquiring confessions no one else could. He worked tirelessly as an advocate on child abuse investigations, relentlessly pursued cold-cases, and always did everything he could to protect women, children, and society’s most vulnerable. During a hostage negotiation, he once offered to exchange himself so the victims could go free. He put his life on the line to help others, and was never really, “off-duty.” Once during a family vacation in California, he jumped out of the car to save migrant workers in an overloaded truck that flipped over and caught fire, telling his family, “Of course I had to help them, they have families too.” That was Jack. He had a mindset and soul for service, always putting others before himself with humility like no one else. Jack was the lead detective on a number of complex cases, including the 1982 murder of Diane Masters. The case was solved in 1988 with the arrest of three offenders, becoming the subject of multiple books, documentaries, and even a movie titled, “Deadly Matrimony,” in which Jack was portrayed by Brian Dennehy. The movie was a success that spun off into four additional movies, each one of the sequels now under the title, “Jack Reed.” To the amazement of Jack and his family, a police movie franchise was born. Jack rose through the ranks of the Cook County Sheriff’s Department, battled some corruption within the agency, and retired as a Lieutenant. His care-taking mission and call to service continued even after retirement, however, as he then worked on cold cases pro bono. Detectives from the area and around the world would reach out to Jack for assistance on investigations, as he was friendly, accessible, and insightful (and of course, always willing to help see justice served). Jack was an incredible husband, father, and papa to 4 grandchildren. While he worked so long and hard professionally, he also found time to bond with his children (Nicole and John), participating in their interests, and of course, in their families later in life. Whether it was through the Boy Scouts and countless Summer Camp/Boundary Waters trips, helping out on complex homework assignments, or just playing catch, Jack (DAD) was always available. Jack would show up at the softball/baseball games of Nicole and John in full uniform at times, and always there when it mattered most. Jack was also a great brother to Jim and especially to his sister Eileen, caring for her and her special needs in such a sweet and tender manner, like she was his own daughter. Jack is survived by his loving wife Arlene Reed (nee Pond), who he called “Bun” (short for Bunny, and Jack was “Bugs,” aka Bugs Bunny); daughter Nicole T. Reed of Estero, FL, and granddaughters Sarah Bier of Boston, MA, and Madeline Bier of Cleveland, Ohio; son John M. Reed (wife Amanda Clark Reed) of Lockport, IL, granddaughter Sophia and grandson Roland; brother James “Jim” Reed of O’Fallon, MO and sister-in-law Evelyn Reed; John and Marge McMahon of Darien, IL; cousins Camille and Rich Haase of Caledonia, IL; niece Michelle Reed and nephew Rick Reed of MO; niece Ann O’Brien of Oak Lawn, IL, niece Eileen (nee O’Brien) Orzech and husband Russ Orzech of Oak Lawn, IL; sister-in-law Danielle O’Brien of Oak Lawn IL, great nieces and nephews Sara O’Brien of Oak Lawn, IL; Kyle, Anthony, and Tyler Meadows, Jessica Reed, Emily Reed and Taylor Tettamble, and nine great great nieces and nephews. Doggie grandchildren Buddy and Jovie of Lockport, IL and his namesake, Jack Jr., a 90 lb. sheepadoodle of Estero, FL who patrols his house almost as good as Big Jack would. Jack is preceded in death by his parents James (Jim) and Honora Reed (nee O’Shea), sister Eileen Reed, niece Jenenne Reed Meadows, nephew Alan Reed, son-in-law Matt Bier, mother in-law Anne T. Pond, father in-law Willard M. Pond, and brother in-law Willard F. Pond. Jack was a devoted Catholic, strong conservative, and would pray for all people of the world, regardless of political affiliation or nationality. He was also a patriotic man, wanting a safe country and a peaceful world. He was an avid reader, historian, and again, just a good man. We are all better for having him in our lives, and our world is better because of JACK REED. His former partners and many still on the force today, 25 years after his retirement, will often say, “It’s Jack Reed, he’s a legend!” As his family, we of course already knew that. Jack was, still is, and forever will be, amazing! We love you! Visitation Monday, July 31st from 3-8 p.m. and Tuesday, August 1st from 9:30 a.m. until time of Prayers at 10:15 at the Robert J. Sheehy & Sons Funeral Home, 9000 W. 151st Street, Orland Park, IL to St. Michael Church, 14327 Highland Avenue, Orland Park, IL for Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. Interment Good Shepherd Cemetery. Hello everyone,

Hope that you're all having a wonderful summer. I have news on the Northside Retiree Breakfast. We ARE moving to a new location with a new day/date and time.

The breakfast is moving to D'Agostino's in Niles at 7530 W Oakton Ave. To accommodate us we are going to the fist TUESDAY of the month, which will be 01 August. The doors OPEN at 0900 hours, and we will have the place to ourselves until 1100 hours. There will be a small menu of regular breakfast items, the cost will be a phenomenal $15/person which includes tax and tip. Try getting breakfast anywhere else for that (other than McDonald's). So, mark up your calendars and I'll see you there.
