Stephen Herbert.jpg

Stephen Michael Herbert, age 84, of Chicago, IL, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Son of the late Alfred August Herbert and Rosella (née Schmitz) Herbert, of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; Loving husband of Melaine Herbert, for sixty years; Beloved father of Stephen (Pamela Kuhn), Elizabeth, Martin (Kathleen Roll), Paul (Liz) and Christopher; Cherished grandfather to Coleman and Cyrus. Fond uncle and friend to many. Steve, as most knew him, was preceded in death by brothers John Herbert and David Herbert, and by his sister Marilyn Bertz. Steve turned a passion for photography and graphic arts into a profession and started several businesses early in his career. He ultimately retired as a senior photographer, working in the graphic arts unit of the Chicago Police Department. In his career there, Steve had the unique honor of taking the official portrait of the renowned Harold Washington, late Mayor of City of Chicago, which is signed by Steve, and hangs in the main Chicago Public Library downtown. Always ready with a kind word or humorous quip, Steve treasured the people in his life far above material things and believed strongly in making the world a better place for all. He put this belief into action through his volunteer work, his participation in community and labor organizing, and peaceful actions for social change, including mobilizing and disseminating news of the civil rights activities going on in the Albany, GA area, during his time of service in the Air Force. While always willing to enthusiastically share his passions, Steve believed the best way to change people’s hearts - minds was through example. His community efforts included volunteering at soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and thirty-three years as a eucharistic minister at Christ Hospital. After retirement, Steve also developed a passion for painting and was a prolific member of a local senior painters' group, where he continued to make good friends and share inspiration. Steve was loved for his warm smile, joyful laugh, generous heart, and faithful spirit. He will be missed by the many friends and loved ones whose lives he blessed and inspired during his long life. Visitation, Friday, Jan 19, 2024, 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., Curley Funeral Home, 6116 W. 111th Street, Chicago Ridge, IL 60415.
