John Michael "Nate" Garrity, age 69, of Chicago, IL, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2024. He was born March 6, 1954, in Chicago. John, known to many as “Nate” and “Officer G.,” dedicated 30 years of his life (1982-2012) serving as a Chicago Police Officer, receiving over 100 CPD commendations, service, performance, and lifesaving awards. He began his educational journey at St. Ignatius Grammar School, continued to Sullivan High School, where he was a proud Tiger, and later, he graduated from the Chicago Police Academy. In his free time, John was an avid Chicago sports fan, especially devoted to the Bears and Cubs. He cherished spending time with friends, going to Bears games and exploring new places through travel. John was the beloved son of the late Mary, née Cooney; brother of the late James (Pam) and Joan; and nephew of the late Michael (CPD), Robert (CPD), Jack (CPD), and Catherine Gaughan. He will be remembered as a much-loved cousin and dear friend to many. A true Patcher, John was proud to have been born in St. Ignatius Parish in Rogers Park, on Newgard Ave., hence his saying, “NFL – Newgard for Life!” He found community and joy at Bruno's Lounge, also in Rogers Park, the neighborhood he loved and where he lived and worked most of his life. John Garrity's legacy lives on through the memories and laughs he created with those he loved and through the impact he made during his time as a Chicago Police Officer. May he rest in peace. Family and friends to meet for Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 10 a.m., at Holy Child Jesus Catholic Parish (St. Margaret Mary Church), 2324 W. Chase Ave., Chicago. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Misericordia Heart of Mercy, 6300 N. Ridge Ave., Chicago, IL, 60660 (misericordia.com).
