Robert J Haas, age 75, a resident of Naperville, IL since 1990, passed away unexpectedly on July 23, 2024, at his home. He was born on November 12, 1948, in Chicago, IL. Bob is survived by his children: Jill Valadez, her husband Brandon, and their two children, Ian and Caroline; Robert Haas III, his fiancée Amy and their two children, Liam and Harper. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Elaine Haas. Bob was drafted into the service two years after graduating Kelly High School and served in the Army from February 1968 to November 1969 as an E5 Sergeant in C Company 4th of the 503rd Infantry Regiment. He was awarded two Purple Hearts along with the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry with Bronze Star, Vietnam Service, Army Good Conduct, Army Commendation, National Defense Service, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign medals. Bob served as a Chicago police officer after the Army from 1970-1978 and was a commodities broker until his retirement in 2012. Bob was a man who enjoyed the simple things in life: sports, crossword puzzles, a good steak, and his role as a grandpa and Uncle Buck to all his nieces and nephews. He was also an avid movie fan, so it seems fitting to quote one of his favorites: "What we do in life, echoes in eternity." You will be loved and missed. For eternity. Family and friends are invited to meet for the final committal services on September 6, 2024, at 10:00 am at the Abraham Lincoln Cemetery, Elwood, IL. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the United States Army. Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Naperville, IL was entrusted with arrangements.

Kenneth Roy Hoffman, a proud veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2024. Ken was born to Henry and Margaret Hoffman on March 21, 1923, in Evanston, Illinois, grew up in Wilmette, and attended New Trier High School. Ken married his sweetheart, Muriel Schmidt, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wilmette, Illinois on May 15, 1948. He and Muriel raised their family in Deerfield, Illinois before moving to Twin Lakes, Wisconsin in 2004. In 2019, Ken returned to Illinois where he was a beloved resident of Sunrise Senior Living of Gurnee. At the age of 19, Ken enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he proudly served in the 483rd Bombardment Group, 816th Squadron, flying 35 missions as a tail gunner on the Flying Fortress B-17. Ken engaged in battles over Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Austria, and Germany. On his fifth mission, Ken was wounded in combat action over Ploesti, Romania on July 31, 1944, a sacrifice for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. Other wartime awards include the Air Medal, 1st Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and 2nd Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a member of the Gurnee American Legion, Post 771. After his military service, Ken served as an officer with the Wilmette Police Department, Chief of Police for Great Lakes Naval Station in North Chicago, Wilmette Park District, and worked at the Deerfield Public Library. After retirement, he continued flying as a hobby, including his last flight as a co-pilot in a Piper Cub at age 98. Ken was an avid golfer and fisherman and especially loved trout fishing at Bennett Spring in Missouri. He was an excellent downhill skier and instructor and was awarded numerous NASTAR gold medals even to the age of 91. He loved skiing with his family in Colorado, Utah, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Austria, and along with the Snowseekers Ski Club among whom he met his dear friend and late-life companion, Dolores. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, wife Muriel, sisters Margaret (Gilbert) Geils and Laureen (Ken) Steffey, son David (Hazel) Hoffman, and daughter Diane (Ken) Kenealy. He is survived by his daughter Nancy (Jay) Clifton of Gurnee, Illinois, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Arrangement by Cremation Society of Illinois. A military memorial service will be held at Fort Sheridan National Cemetery on September 20, 2024, at 2:00pm.

Our monthly luncheon this month is on Thursday, August 15, 2024 at the EAGLE BUFFET IN CASINO ARIZONA, 524 N. 92nd St, Scottsdale, AZ 85256, right off the 101 & 202 at McKellips. The buffet does not open until 11:00 AM. We will check-in at 11:00 AM. Stay in the right line, and please identify that you are with the CPD AZ Retiree Luncheon group. When you pay, the cost of the luncheon is now $25.00, which includes all you can eat, beverage, dessert, tax, and tip. Laura Peterson, the food service manager, is our contact person. She is doing a wonderful job to accommodate our group. They will try to get us through the line and get us seated quickly. We will be in the rear room if it is available. Attention FOP Members,

I want to emphasize the crucial importance of our organization making an endorsement in the upcoming presidential election. The FOP’s endorsement is more than just a symbol of our support; it is a powerful statement of the values and priorities we hold dear as the largest law enforcement organization in the nation. Equally important, it is one of the few national groups that allow its members to actively participate in the selection process. In this pivotal election, our endorsement can help shape the future of law enforcement in this country, providing a chance to support leadership that understands and values the critical role we play in maintaining peace and order.

The evaluation of the candidates for President of the United States is the exclusive responsibility of the National Fraternal Order of Police. ONLY the National FOP can ensure that every member, in every State and local lodge, has the opportunity to participate in this process. This approach enables the National FOP to speak with one unified voice, thereby enhancing the value of our endorsement.

We presented questionnaires to both Vice President Harris and former President Trump. These questionnaires were designed to assess each candidate's stance on critical issues affecting law enforcement and to understand their plans to support our profession. The Trump campaign completed the questionnaire, while the Harris campaign provided a letter as their response.

We are providing their unedited responses in electronic format for your review and consideration.

Each state is responsible for adopting a process to evaluate the presidential candidates in advance of the Fall meeting of the National Board of Trustees, which begins on September 6, 2024. A formal vote on the endorsement will be conducted, with each Trustee casting a single vote for a candidate or for “no endorsement.” A candidate who receives a two-thirds majority of the National Board of Trustees will receive the endorsement of the National FOP.
