Patrick Michael Ryan, 79, of Chicago, IL passed away peacefully in his Beverly home, surrounded by family, on Thursday August 27, 2026.

Pat is survived by his wife of 55 years Mary Jane (Begin), his children Edward (Anna Maria), Karen (Patrick) Vaughan, and Kevin (Irina); his seven grandchildren Patrick, Martin, Lillian, Emmett, Amelia, Francesca, and Thomas; his sisters Bonnie (the late Ernie) O’Day and Mary (Jay) Wagner and brother Edward (Mary); many nieces, nephews, brothers and sister’s in-law and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Mary (nee Barry); his sisters Rosemary (Rich/Sally) Poppish, Winnie (the late Bernie) McNellis and Josephine (the late Bill Roche and the late Jerry Kirby).

Pat was born June 1, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, the fifth of seven siblings. He grew up “on the Boulevard” in Visitation Parish and graduated from Mount Carmel High School, where he was a member of the 1965 City Championship Basketball Team and a 2010 recipient of the “Man in the Arena” award. He went on to play Basketball at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he met his wife Mary, from Midland, Michigan. He was inducted into the Aquinas Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 and continues to hold the record as the school’s all-time leading rebounder.

Pat spent more than 30 years as a Chicago police officer and later went to be a counselor at the Cook County Boot Camp.

Pat (also known as “Otis”) loved the City of Chicago, and took great pride in his South Side roots. An avid traveler, he enjoyed long road trips and meeting new friends in cities around the country. He was many things, including an incredible card player (often claiming to have invented the game of “31,”) a self-proclaimed above-average golfer, and a Jeopardy enthusiast. Pat made it a point to always show up for people in good times and in bad, never missing a party or a funeral. He had friends of all ages and lived every second of his life to the fullest. More than anything, he loved his family, especially his seven grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Visitation Thursday, September 3rd from 4:30-8:00 p.m. at Donnellan Funeral Home 10525 S. Western Ave. Chicago. Funeral Friday 10:00 am from the funeral home to St. Barnabas Church 10134 S. Longwood Dr. for Mass 11:00 a.m. Interment private.
