Jerry M. Axel, a devoted son, loving brother, beloved uncle, dearest great-uncle, and true friend, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2023, in Skokie, IL. Born on November 21, 1955, in Chicago, IL, to the late Samuel and Thelma, née McRoy, Axel, Jerry was a cherished member of his family and the community. Known for his funny, adventurous, and courageous spirit, he made a lasting impact on everyone he met. Jerry grew up in Skokie, surrounded by the love of his family. He was a protective and caring brother to Debra (Stuart) Hersh, and his bond with her was unbreakable. He was also the beloved uncle of Lauren (Joe) D’Amico and Rebecca Hersh, and the dearest great-uncle to Olivia and Owen D’Amico. His family will remember him for his unwavering love, his contagious laughter, and his inspiring stories. Academically inclined, Jerry obtained his bachelor’s degree from Bradley University in Peoria, IL. His education laid the foundation for a successful career that would see him serve his community with dedication and valor. Jerry retired as a Police Officer with the Skokie Police Department after 30 years of service. His colleagues were not just his coworkers but his best friends, sharing a bond that transcended professional boundaries. Jerry was a man of many interests. He was a world travel enthusiast who delighted in exploring new places, cultures, and cuisines. He was a coffee aficionado who enjoyed the simple pleasure of a well-brewed cup. As a canine lover, Jerry found joy and companionship in his furry friends. He was also a history buff, always eager to delve into the past and learn more about the world. Jerry's sense of humor was legendary, his laughter infectious, and his ability to make others smile, unparalleled. Jerry M. Axel will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable life. Let us remember Jerry not with sadness but with the joy and laughter he brought into our lives. His spirit, courage, and love for life will continue to inspire us. Funeral services are private. Mary C. O’Donnell Age 93, Native of County Cork, Ireland. Beloved wife of 50 years to the late James O’Donnell. Devoted mother of Mary Fedor, James (Laura), John (Kathy), Charles (Shari), and Theresa (Todd). Cherished grandmother of Patrick (Amanda), Daniel, Courtney, Connor, Erin, Cameron, Jack, Caitlin, Madelyn, Charlie, and Colin. Proud great-grandmother of Macy and Faye. “Out of the Darkness” Walk for Suicide Prevention!

Since 2018, tragically, we have lost more than 20 of our members to suicide. On Saturday, 21 October 2023, the Chicago Police Department will join forces with the CFD and the OEMC to continue the fight for suicide prevention, and for the mental health and wellness of our members. The CPD/CFD/OEMC – First Responders United Team will participate in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention “Out of the Darkness” Walk for Suicide Prevention. We will come together to show support for those who may be in need of a helping hand at this time, or at any time in the future. We will also walk in honor of those that we have lost previously, both active and retired. This is a three-mile walk, however, you are welcome to also show support by joining us at the finish line to greet walkers as they arrive. This year’s event will begin at 0900 hours at Montrose Harbor, with a stage program and Honored Bead Ceremony at 1030 hours. The walk will begin at 1100 hours and the event will conclude at 1300 hours. All Department members are encouraged to participate in this very worthy cause. Interested members may register by using the QR code on AMC 301651 flyer attachment. Signs and t-shirts that honor members that we’ve lost are welcomed. Our EAP members will be onsite. Bureau of Detectives Special Investigations Unit 079 Salutes 017th District Tact Officers P.O. M. Vivanco #9505 P.O. D. Waudiwala #19418 P.O. N. Bragagnolo#18191 P.O. P. Chorzepa #7656 P.O. R. Gomez #1576 On 06 October 2023, the above officers took an offender into custody for an unrelated offense. They soon learned that the offender was wanted for Predatory Criminal Sexual Assaults of children. the officers learned that the offender has sexually assaulted a male from ages of 4 to 6 years of age on various occasions. The officers also learned that the offender has sexually assaulted a female when she was 8 years of age. Post arrest it was learned there that there were several more victims that were sexually assaulted as children by the same offender. The offender admitted to some of the acts post Miranda Warnings. The offender was subsequently charged with numerous counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assaults of children and Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse. The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is graciously providing a bus to transport 15-20 CPD sworn volunteers, including 1 sergeant.
