John Nielson, 77, of Gladwin, passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on April 16, 1946, to Norman and Catherine Nielson in Chicago, Illinois. United in marriage to the love of his life, Glenda Miller, John's life was marked by dedication, service, and love for his family. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, John embarked on a successful career as a Police Officer for the City of Chicago. Even after retirement, and moving to Gladwin, he continued to contribute to his community, working an additional 18 years as courthouse security. A passionate pilot, John found joy in traveling and exploring new horizons. He loved to read, and he was known for finding great deals at garage sales. Embracing the beauty of the outdoors, John relished camping and fishing. His enthusiasm for life extended to family gatherings, where he delighted in playing games and dancing, creating cherished memories with his grandchildren. John's warm and welcoming spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his devoted wife, Glenda, and their children: Dawn (Garth) Shackelford, Amy Nielson (Frank Gremski), and Jerry (Terri) Nielson. His grandchildren, Daniella Patman, Nicolai Shackelford, Jake Nielson, and Charlie Nielson brought immense joy to his life. John is also remembered by his sisters: Shirly Grabeic, Pat Frasher, and Marie Waldron, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Norman, and Catherine. Funeral Mass will be conducted on Friday, December 15, 2023, 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gladwin. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2023, from 3-8:00 P.M. at Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home, Gladwin. Memorial Contributions may be made according to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Officer wellness!

Spiritual Wellness is a vital part of Officer Wellness. The Chaplains Unit holds its Fellowship Meetings and the opportunity to share faith every Wednesday at the PSHQ located at 3510 S. Michigan Avenue; and every Friday at the Training Academy located at 1300 W. Jackson Blvd. This week’s meetings will be held Today, 13 DEC 2023 from 1230-1300 hours in the PSHQ Multi-Purpose Room; and 15 DEC 2023 from 1300-1330 hours at the Training Academy. All active duty and retired CPD members are welcome to attend. Additionally, The Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers Women’s Bible Study holds its monthly meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the Training Academy located at 1300 W. Jackson Blvd. This month’s meeting will be held Today,13 DEC 2023 from 1600-1800 hours in Room 201.
