Theodore Bruch Born: May 15, 1940 in Seneca, Il. Died: October 6, 2025 in Kirkland, Il. Theodore J. "Ted" Bruch, 85, passed away peacefully in his home on October 6, 2025, after a long illness. Ted, the son of Carl E. and Agnes G. Bruch, was born on May 15, 1940, in Seneca, IL. Ted married Judith A. Smith, on January 19, 1963, and they shared 54 wonderful years together until her passing in 2016 at the age of 74. Ted was a dedicated farmer, community leader and an astute businessman. He took great pride in the farm and its operation. Following his father's death at the age of 57, Ted took over and his father's farming operation and trucking company at the early age of 36. Ted also devoted himself to the community having joined the Kirkland Community Fire Department (KCFD) in 1958, volunteering for 44 years. He became Chief in 1985 and served in that capacity for 17 years. Ted also served as a board member for several years for the State Bank of Kirkland and its successor. Ted survived by his children, James (Sandy) Bruch of Kirkland, Connie Bruch-Harrison of Mesa, AZ, Debra Cash of Livingston, TX and Tracy Bruch of Kirkland; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Taylor, Gold Canyon, AZ and Donna (Gary) DeBarr, Athens, GA; and brother, John (Sally) Bruch, Kirkland, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ted's memory can be made to the Kirkland Community Fire Department, 3891 State Rt. 72, Kirkland, IL 60146. Funeral Service will be held at 10 am Friday, October 10, 2025, at Olson's Quiram Kirkland Chapel, 309 S. Fifth St., Kirkland, IL 60146, with Pastor Willie Little officiating. Joseph Charles Ogarek, age 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Joe was the beloved husband of the late Cecilia “Ceil” Mary (née Cahill); cherished father of Margaret "Peg" Ogarek, Joseph Ogarek, Catherine "Katie" Ogarek, and the late Mary Ogarek. He was a loving brother to Maureen (Hugh) Cahill (née Ogarek), and a proud brother-in-law to the late Michael (Connie) Cahill, James Cahill, and Patrick Cahill. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Joseph Ogarek. Known and loved as a favorite uncle, proud great-uncle, fond cousin to many, and a loyal friend and neighbor, Joe touched the lives of all who knew him. A lifelong Chicagoan, Joe grew up in the Gage Park neighborhood and later raised his family in Brighton Park. He honorably served his Country in the United States Air Force before beginning a distinguished career with the Chicago Police Department, where he served for over 30 years. In retirement, Joe embraced life fully—traveling, tending to his beautiful garden, cheering on the Chicago White Sox, and, above all, spending treasured time with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his warm and welcoming spirit, unwavering dedication to those he loved, his hearty laugh and ability to always answer that final Jeopardy question. Leonilo “Leon” Portillo of San Antonio, Texas passed away on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at the age of 70. He was born on April 26, 1955, in Canutillo, Texas. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 31, 1973, and recalled that his enlistment was the best thing he could have done. Throughout his USAF military service, Airman Leonilo was recognized as an “Honor Graduate in Air Training Command,” “Outstanding Marksman” on the rifle range; and the achievement of the title of a Law Enforcement Specialist. He was honorably discharged from the USAF on July 30, 1977. Leonilo retired from the Chicago Police Department after 30 years of law enforcement duties. Throughout those years there were assignments that highlighted his police career. Officer Portillo was recognized and presented a Chicago Police Department “Lifesaving Award” that read: Awarded to Sergeant Leonilo Portillo #920; “For a Successful Effort in Saving a Human Life Which Involved Exceptional Courage or Performance.” Another notable aspect of his Law Enforcement training and responsibilities included five years on the Chicago Police Special Weapons Assault Team (SWAT). Having been assigned protection duties in the United States Secret Service, Sergeant Portillo was presented a Certificate of Appreciation that read: “In special recognition of your efforts and superior contributions to the law enforcement responsibilities of the United States Secret Service.” (2011) Leonilo Portillo volunteered for CASA as a child advocate, a position he took seriously and devoted his entire heart into improving children’s lives. He was a lifetime member of the Edgewood District Veterans 501 (3) C Non-Profit Organization. He was also a member of the Lion’s Club and volunteered with the Fort Sam Houston Memorial Services Detachment (MSD). Leonilo was preceded in death by his parents, Concepcion and Hermilo Portillo; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lucia and Santos Mendoza; and two brothers- in-law, George and Victor Mendoza. He is survived by his loving wife Martha; His children April Groveau, Tina Marie Guzman and Jason John Portillo (Beth); His grandchildren Mia Bella & Jacob Xavier Guzman, David Riley, Jordan James and Layla Brooke Portillo. He is survived by his siblings Irma Moll, Mary Grand (Al), Hermilo Jr. (Andrea), Guadalupe (Christina), John (Adriana), Richard (Norman), Jesse, Ramon (Maria), Raul (Francine) and Laura Portillo. He remains in the heart of his brother-in-law, Albert Mendoza. He is survived by aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. With Leon having spent so much time volunteering, he cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren the most. He expressed pride when watching them play sports, perform in plays and compete in dance competitions. The family would like to thank the University Health 7 AYA staff and Gentiva North Hospice for the exceptional care and compassion they showed our loved one.
